PAS wants anti-ICERD rally to send clear message to the world

ISLAMIST party PAS said it will proceed with taking part in a rally against the international anti-discrimination treaty, ICERD, despite the misgivings of other Muslim leaders who want the protest to be called off.

The rally was needed to send a strong message to the international community and the Malaysian government that the people would not accept the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), said PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin.

“The rally needs to go on even though the government has given guarantees that ICERD will not be ratified,” Hashim said after PAS hosted an anti-ICERD rally in Perlis last night.

“This is the opportunity to tell the people and the world that this is a sensitive matter and that Muslims cannot accept it.”

PAS, along with Umno, has opposed the government’s ratification of ICERD as both claimed it would erode Malay special privileges and the position of Islam as the country’s official religion.

Even after the government said on November 23 that it will not ratify ICERD, PAS, Umno and Malay supremacist groups said the December 8 anti-ICERD rally will still go on.

However, some Muslim groups have spoken out against the rally following riots that broke out last week over the relocation of a Hindu temple in Selangor.

The muftis of Kelantan, Perak, Penang and Negri Sembilan have also publicly urged the organisers to cancel the rally since the government has shelved its plan to ratify ICERD.

In his speech earlier at the Perlis rally, Hashim said the ICERD issue has revived the spirits of Umno and PAS members after their defeat in the 14th general election.

“Before the ICERD issue, PAS and Umno members were on their deathbeds. But when the ICERD issue cropped up, they became alive again.”

Present yesterday were Umno Supreme Council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, Arau MP Shahidan Kassim and Perlis PAS commissioner Mohd Shukri Ramli. – December 3, 2018.

  • Yeah right. Other OIC nations already ratified ICERD. What wrong messages to be sent?

I thought only UMNO adopts the 3R but looks like not only PAS is no longer Islam for All, it is sharing the same ideology UMNO 3R.

  • The jokes of Malaysia b4 the year ends. A kecik mayun trying to be a global player thinking that speeches will do so. Hasut Masin go and sincerely pray 5 times a day to gain merits for your jouney. All these mundane activities are not for you to involve for it will only taint your prayers. Be a benevolent and peace loving magnanimous clerics. Your actions are fully a divergence to your teaching and faith that all your 5 prayers a day has gone to waste.
