BARISAN Nasional (BN) will look into other options, including forging ties with other Chinese-based parties, if MCA leaves the pact, said coalition chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
However, he did not say what the options are.
MCA delegates are expected to decide today at the party’s annual general assembly on the party’s future with BN.
The annual meeting this year is also the first time a BN chairman has not been invited to officiate. Likewise, invitations were also not extended to leaders of other BN component parties.
Zahid also said that BN and MCA leaders had met before to discuss the Chinese party’s new attempts to regain Chinese support. During the last general election, almost 95% of the Chinese support went to Pakatan Harapan. MCA only won one parliamentary seat, held by its new president Wee Ka Siong.
“We are confident with the changes being implemented by the new team in MCA. If they do it well, then the Chinese support will return to them.
“If not, BN will look at other measures. Not all Chinese are in favour of the Pakatan government,” he said.
He said the Chinese community was hoping for an alternative party which was multiracial and can work with BN, especially with the possibility of by-elections in Rantau and Cameron Highlands.
The Umno president also said that whatever decision that MCA makes on its future with BN, it must be informed officially to BN.
MCA and Umno are the founding members of the Alliance pact in 1952 before they were joined by MIC. These three parties once again formed the backbone of the ruling coalition when it was rebranded as BN in 1973. – December 2, 2018.
