NEGATIVE reactions to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) are due to Muslims’ mindset and not the treaty itself, said Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar.

“Although the ratification is not happening, Muslims should realise what the real problem is. The problem is not ICERD, the problem is mindset,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

He called on Muslims to address problems concerning the religion that have existed long before Malaysia even mulled ratifying ICERD.

The Pokok Sena MP also blamed the opposition for the negative reactions to ICERD, saying it is trying to reduce Malay-Muslim support for the ruling Pakatan Harapan.

Putrajaya last week announced that it will no longer proceed with plans to ratify ICERD, following outcry from Malay groups.

Despite the climbdown, groups planning a December 8 mega rally originally meant to oppose the ratification of ICERD have said they will go ahead with the demonstration.

Mahfuz said there is no need for the rally, as the government has decided not to proceed with the ratification.

It would be better if the groups behind the planned demonstration organise “majlis kesyukuran” (thanksgiving feast) at mosques to show their gratitude for Putrajaya’s move instead, he said.

“Since the cabinet has decided not to ratify ICERD, there is no need for a demonstration. Such acts need a direction. Demonstrations need a direction.

“However, if they insist on holding it, I believe Malaysians and the whole world will laugh at their directionless demonstration.”

He added that Muslims should address issues, such as drug abuse, unwanted pregnancies and inability to read the Quran, instead of focusing on ICERD. – November 26, 2018.
