A PERAK Umno leader has denied threatening the political secretary to Minister P. Waytha Moorthy, claiming a video clip of the Monday incident was “edited”.
Syed Afzarizal Syed Salim, who is a Umno Tapah branch committee member, said he was merely trying to hand P. Muniandy a letter of protest.
“I had already received instructions from the police not to touch (the aide) and to just hand over the letter,” Syed Afzarizal told The Malaysian Insight.
He said he was told that he would be arrested if he were to manhandle the aide.
In the five-minute video, Syed Afzarizal is seen attempting to block Muniandy’s car from exiting a school where he had just attended a programme.
“I was not stopping the car. I was waiting at the front gate to hand him the protest note. He insisted on driving on, so I stood my ground near the gate.”
Syed Afzarizal and several individuals then urge Muniandy not to be afraid and to get out of his car to receive a protest note addressed to Waytha Moorthy, who is leading the Pakatan Harapan government’s efforts to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
Syed Afzarizal is heard sternly warning the minister not to threaten the special rights of the Malays and Islam, saying there has been “enough of a dark history with May 13, 1969. Don’t let there be any other nonsense”.
The incident took place at the front gate of SK Datuk Kelana school in Tapah.
Muniandy lodged a police report on Wednesday, saying he was threatened.
Syed Afzarizal said he, too, had filed a report and has offered to fully cooperate with the police.
“I have also lodged a police report on the incident, saying I did not make threats or do anything.
“I have the proof with me. The video was edited by irresponsible parties. The complete video is with me.”
ICERD is one of six human rights treaties Waytha Moorthy said the government hoped to ratify by the first quarter of 2019.
The treaty has received strong opposition from Malay rights groups, as well as Umno and PAS which are planning a massive street protest in Kuala Lumpur on December 8 to oppose its ratification.
Malaysia, along with Myanmar, North Korea and Brunei, is among is the 14 countries yet to ratify the convention. – November 23, 2018.

Charge this man for threatening a government official and obstructing him from carrying out his duties.. The police must not be bias in their actions if they are committed to their responsibilities.
