UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has assured the public that there will be no rioting when Umno and PAS protest against the International Convention of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) on December 8, just hours after saying Malays will make their anger known if the UN convention is ratified by Putrajaya.
He said the protest rally is against Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waytha Moorthy’s plan to have ICERD endorsed by local groups before Putrajaya ratifies it.
“Even though we are building momentum with events in each state before the rally, I will promise everyone that there will be no rioting.
“Don’t make provocative claims that Umno and PAS presidents are going to stir a riot. If people don’t disturb us we will not disturb anyone,” the former Home Minister said today at an Umno leaders roadshow in Selangor.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad assured Malaysians there will be no trouble over Putrajaya’s efforts to ratify ICERD, unless instigated by Zahid.
Dr Mahathir, however, said the matter was sensitive to the Malay community and the government will listen to public opinion.
“Unless Zahid stirs up trouble, there will be no riot,” Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying by the Malay Mail today at a press conference at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) 2018 Summit in Papua New Guinea.
Ahmad Zahid today said Waytha Moorthy should be working to ensure harmony among the races as that was his role as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
The Umno president also brought up an old interview, that has resurfaced online and gone viral in recent weeks, in which the Hindraf leader tells foreign media about Hindus being forced to convert to join the civil service and how the government was working to demolish thousands of temples.
“All these are lies as Umno has never done any of these things claimed by Waytha Moorthy overseas,” he said.
Umno, PAS, and several PH leaders have expressed concerns over the move to ratify the ICERD, as they fear it will erode Malay rights enshrined in the federal constitution.
Earlier this week, Waytha Moorthy said the government would not abolish Article 153 of the federal constitution which guarantees the special position of the Malays in favour of ICERD.
“The government has no intention of abolishing Article 153.
“I also want to state as a lawyer that no discrimination is involved, and the special position of the Malays and natives, including those from Sabah and Sarawak, will be safeguarded and protected. – November 18, 2018.
