PENANG is considering calling for requests for proposals to implement its water taxi idea to link the island and the mainland, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Chow said the water taxis could serve different routes between the island and mainland Seberang Prai.
“They can link different parts of the state like Tanjung Tokong, George Town, Jelutong, Bayan Baru, and Bayan Lepas on the island; and Butterworth, Prai, Tambun, Batu Kawan, and Nibong Tebal on the mainland.
“These are locations that can be considered and explored,” he told reporters during a press conference at the state assembly building today.
Chow said water taxis were mooted by the state under the Penang Transport Master Plan but no action had been taken to implement the plan.
He said Rapid Ferry, which operates the existing ferry service, could come in to lead the initiative since it was the main water transport service provider.
“Water transport has been given a low priority.
“I have told my officers not to wait anymore. Maybe we should be doing a separate request for proposal to look at water transport,” he said.
Chow also said Penang was waiting to hear from Prasarana, which runs Rapid Ferry, to present its plan on improving the existing ferry service.
He said there have been discussions among officers.
Prasarana took over ferry service operations from Penang Port Sdn Bhd in May this year, rebranding the service to Rapid Ferry.
The ferries have been a loss-making service for decades.
From May to September, Rapid Ferry made only about RM2.69 million from fares, while its monthly operation costs were RM1.75 million.
Meanwhile, Chow, who is celebrating his 60th birthday today, also told reporters that he hoped life after 60 would be more colourful and fulfilling.
“I hope to make more achievements as I serve Penang.
“I will also be enjoying 50% discounts for things like train and bus tickets,” he said. β November 14, 2018.
