THE police’s investigation of the Bukit Kukus landslide that killed nine foreign workers last month is almost completed, said Penang police chief A. Thaiveegan.
The police have been probing the incident, which happened on October 19 at a road construction site in Paya Terubong, for criminal negligence.
“So far, we have spoken to almost 70 witnesses from various departments and agencies for their statements.
“We expect to wrap up and present our findings to the state prosecution director’s office in a few days for further instructions,” Thaiveegan said in a short statement today.
The police previously said they were speaking to the main contractor of the road project, the sub-contractor, government agencies and other individuals.
The project to build an alternative road in Paya Terubong is owned by the Penang Island City Council.
The Occupational Safety and Health Department, Construction Industry Development Board, MBPP and the state government are also probing the landslide.
The state has set up a special committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister I Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman, who is a civil engineer by training.
The committee began its first hearing last week, calling up the parties involved to explain the incident. – November 14, 2018.
