DRUG addicts should be rehabilitated instead of being jailed and sentenced to death, said Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

She said the mandatory death sentence on drug offences did not reduce drug related crimes.

“I have discussed with the law minister on what is the most effective deterrent. They (drug users) need rehabilitation instead of putting them in jail and hanging them.

“We have long faced this problem and it is ever increasing,” she told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

Dr Wan Azizah said she had extensively discussed the matter with the Law Minister and the government concluded that mandatory death was not a deterrent for drugs.

“We are in discussion as the mandatory death sentences for any type of drug-related crimes are not actually a deterrent,” she added.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong yesterday said the cabinet has decided that the death penalty for 33 offences under eight acts will be abolished, including murder. – November 14, 2018.

  • Two useless good for nothing ministers, one Azizah and the other Liew. Both of them have nothing better to do except to spend their time trying to protect criminals instead of helping the victims and their families. If they think they wanted to be civilized, they should move to U.S or Australia where there is no death penalty but leave the current penalty aside.
