THE Federal Territories Ministry is mulling ways to penalise contractors if their development work is found blocking drainage systems, which led to flash floods in the capital city yesterday.

Khalid Samad said there were many ongoing construction projects in Kuala Lumpur and not all of them were constantly supervised.

He said several projects had contributed to the blocked drainage system which caused floods to happen.

“We have to decide on surveillance and control of these sites.

“I have discussed with the mayor (Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan) and maybe we will think of ways to penalise the contractors if their works are found to have blocked the drainage system,” he told reporters at Parliament lobby today.

Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur City Hall Enforcement Department director Azman Mahmood said among the areas affected by flash floods were Jalan Wirawati, Jalan Pudu Ulu, Jalan Pudu Perdana, Jalan Cheras, and Jalan Kepong.

Khalid said the rain yesterday was rather heavy but the drainage system would have been able to withstand it.

“Our drainage system can still handle it because it was designed for massive floods within 100 years,” he said. – November 12, 2018.
