PENANG police recorded statements from more than 40 people for investigations into the Bukit Kukus landslide in Paya Terubong, state police chief Commissioner A. Thaiveegan said today.

They include the main contractor, sub-contractor, government agencies and other individuals.

“Some will be called up again for further interviews. We are also calling up others for their statements,” he told the media.

The landslide at a road construction site on October 19 killed nine foreign labourers.

Last week, Thaiveegan said the police had set up a taskforce to investigate the fatal landslide for criminal negligence.

The taskforce is headed by the state criminal investigation department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Zainol Samah.

Many different authorities are probing the landslide, including the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Construction Industry Development Board, the Penang Island City Council and the state government.

The state has set up a special committee, headed by Deputy Chief Minister I Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman, who is a civil engineer by training. The committee is beginning its probe this week. – October 30, 2018.
