HOME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should direct the police to reopen investigations into the death of Teng Beng Hock, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said.

The lawyer, who is representing Teoh’s family, said he was puzzled by Muhyiddin’s statement that the police were awaiting further orders to reopen the case.

“If the police have not already done so, I call upon Muhyiddin, as the Home Minister, to direct them to do so forthwith,” he said in a statement today.

Muhyiddin had earlier this week told the Dewan Rakyat in a written parliamentary reply that the police was still waiting for instructions for further investigation on the case and the scope of the probe from the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

Ramkarpal said Muhyiddin’s confirmation of the matter must be further addressed as there seems to be confusion as to whether such orders have been given.

Ramkarpal had yesterday called for a public inquiry into Teoh’s death in a statement slamming the police for disregarding a court directive to revisit the case.

The Court of Appeal had found there was evidence of foul play in Teoh’s death, and the possibility that Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers who had questioned Teoh were implicated.

Teoh, who was political secretary to former Selangor exco Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor of the MACC office in July 2009 after being questioned for 11 hours the day before. He was the witness in a graft probe involving several assemblymen.

Ramkarpal said he had written to the A-G in July appealing for further investigations to be carried out.

He said the AGC had replied that further investigation should be conducted and that it had written to the inspector-general of police asking for appropriate action to be taken.

“It is clear that both the Court of Appeal and the A-G share a common view that the said MACC officers may have been involved in Teoh’s death and that further investigations, therefore, should be carried out.” – October 24, 2018.
