Ministry studying tsunami SMS alert plan

THE Energy, Science, Technology, Climate Change and Environment Ministry is undertaking a study a tsunami SMS alert plan as part of the country’s early disaster warning system.

Its minister, Yeo Bee Yin, today said the alerts would be sent directly to the mobile phones of individuals based on the location where a tsunami may occur.

“We are tapping into satellite technology so that we can push the warnings directly to mobile phones located where the tsunami might hit.

“This is one of the plans being studied by the ministry on setting up a warning system for tsunamis. This will gradually be expanded for other disasters as well, if applicable,” she said after briefing Sabah Chief Minister Shafie Apdal on the future of the Sabah energy sector earlier today.

She said scheduled disaster drills would also be undertaken to help residents in areas at high risk for tsunami, saying awareness must be raised so that residents will know what to do in an emergency situation.

Yeo said 56 early warning sirens were being installed in high-risk areas across the country.

Recently, Sabah geology expert Dr Felix Tongkul said most areas in Sabah’s west coast had a slim chance of being hit by tsunami, except Tawau.

On October 8, thousands were killed after a tsunami and earthquake hit Palu town in Sulawesi, Indonesia. – October 23, 2018.

  • Why waste money! Just dip that indon kaki pukui Zahid Komidi into the open sea. He can tell you when the tsunami hit just like he talked about the tsunami at Palu.

  • Tsunami is not an issue that we should be wasting our time with.. we are not in any direct path of any tsunami.
Look at more serious issues that can help the Rakyat. Like the solar panel.. something worth exploring in a big way because it can save ppl lots of money from utility bills!
