SARAWAK Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said the proposal to limit the term of office for the prime minister, menteri besar and chief ministers to two terms “looks good in principle”.
He however, said he will wait and see before giving his full support.
Speaking to reporters after opening a boutique hotel near to the Kuching international airport this afternoon, the chief minister said the proposal still needs amendments to be included in the state constitution.
“I have to discuss with all the political parties to get their views first,” he said in reference to the state’s ruling coalition of four parties, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
The four parties are his Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).
“Sarawak is an autonomous state. (The policy) is only applicable to Sarawak when it amends its constitution.”
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced the proposal when presenting in Parliament a motion on the mid-term review of the 11th Malaysia Plan (2016-2020).
He also said the proposal will involve amendments to the federal constitution.
Dr Mahathir said he is confident of getting two-thirds support in Dewan Rakyat to amend the constitution.
Abang Johari, when asked on his hopes for the federal budget, has only three words to say: “Lots of money (for the state)”.
He, however, is not optimistic as the Pakatan Harapan federal government has cancelled many of projects approved by the previous Barisan Nasional government under the 2017 budget. – October 19, 2018.
