Firefighters find 2 bodies in Penang landslide

FIRE and Rescue Department personnel have found two bodies in a landslide that hit a road construction site in Paya Terubong, Penang, this afternoon.

The victims were foreign labourers, the department’s operations officer, Mohd Tarmizi Md Jaafar, told the media.

One man, also a foreigner, has been rescued, and at least 10 others remain missing, he said.

The landslide, which occurred about 1.55pm, hit the site where construction is ongoing to build a 5km alternative road linking Lebuh Thean Teik to Jalan Bukit Jambul via Paya Terubong, passing Bukit Kukus.

The road project is by the Penang Island City Council.

Today’s incident comes at a time when state civil society is objecting to the proposed 19.5km Pan Island Link 1 highway that cuts through hills in Paya Terubong, Bukit Bendera and Relau. – October 19, 2018.
