THE crooked bridge project from Johor to Singapore is not a priority, Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong said.

Instead, the party supports the idea of a third bridge to connect the southern state with the republic to ensure smooth flow of traffic for both sides.

“If it’s a third bridge I think we will be happy to support, I think maybe we will consider.

“But whether you need to remove the Causeway or (the need) to have the crooked bridge, that’s not immediate,” he told reporters at Parliament lobby today in response to the Johor government’s proposal to revive the project that was first mooted by Dr Mahahtir Mohamad during his first stint as first prime minister. 

Yesterday Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian said the crooked bridge is back may become a reality. 

He said Dr Mahathir was keen on reviving it. 

The project was mooted by Dr Mahathir Mohamad before he retired as the prime minister in 2003.

However, Singapore did not agree to the project as it refused to demolish its half of the Causeway, which led to Mahathir announcing his plans to build the crooked bridge.  

Former Prime Minister Najib Razak said Singapor had planned to keep the Causeway for the next 30 years when he met with the Singapore government during his administration to discuss the matter. 

He also said he had asked Singapore to demolish the causeway to make way for another bridge. – October 17, 2018.
