Motion to make Dr Mahathir’s UN speech as foreign policy framework

FOREIGN Minister Saifuddin Abdulllah will table a motion at the upcoming Dewan Rakyat to agree with the foreign policy that was laid out in Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

The order paper, which was released today, also stated that the motion would also provide for his speech to be made the basic framework for Malaysia’s foreign policy.

It stated that the speech made by Dr Mahathir on September 28 had outlined the foreign policy goals and plans for the new Malaysia.

“The speech by the prime minister at the UN’s General Assembly has outlined among others, the position and foreign policy which are based on principles such as not in favour of any power, neutrality and the practice of a prosper-thy-neighbour philosophy.

“The Prime Minister also stressed on the relationship between Malaysia and the world’s major powers, among other issues such as those in Palestine, the fate of Muslims in Rakhine and trade wars between countries with economic powers,” it said.

It said the prime minister had also highlighted the importance of the UN as the main platform to resolve issues and had hoped for the UN to keep playing its role in maintaining international peace and safety.

The motion added the speech had outlined the foreign policy framework to support the country’s social, political and economic development.

The prime minister was in New York to lead a Malaysian delegation at the 73rd session of the United Nations general assembly.

The Dewan Rakyat will begin tomorrow and ends on December 11.
