THE Pakatan Harapan government should proceed with projects that benefit the people, instead of dismantling them purely to spite the previous administration, said former prime minister Najib Razak.
The former Umno president said the MRT Line 3 project, which was cancelled for its exorbitant cost, was one such project that should be continued by the current administration.
“Anything that is good by the previous government, you should continue. Anything that is not good, you can discontinue,” Najib was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times during a party to celebrate his birthday which falls on Monday.
“You can cancel projects, but are you doing it for right reason? Are you doing it for the people of Malaysia, that is the question we must ask.
“The government should not blame the previous government, they must do even better, so that Malaysians who voted them in deserve what they had asked for,” he said.
On May 30, prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced the scrapping of the RM40 billion project as part of the new government’s cost-cutting plan.
The MRT Line 3, part of the third and final line for the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit project, was at its planning and development stage.
The previous administration approved the MRT 3 Circle Line (CCL) on October 30, last year.
Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) had already begun preparation works on the 40km-long line, of which 32km was set to run underground, that was to start operations in 2025.
MRT3, also known as the Circle Line, would have linked MRT1 and MRT2, and was seen as critical to closing the public transport loop. – July 22, 2018.
