POLICE will push for an inquest to be held to ascertain the death of religious school student Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi despite the post mortem stating that he died from bacterial infection, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim.

This comes after Thaqif’s family disputed the post mortem findings, saying it was “illogical and dubious”.

They have also hired a lawyer for advice.

Noor Rashid said since there is now a dispute on the cause of death, police will push for the inquest soon.

“Everything is already done, we will make sure there is an inquest,” he told reporters at the Bukit Aman Special Branch Aidilfitri open house in Kuala Lumpur today.

The 11-year-old Thaqif’s case received wide media coverage as the first post mortem revealed signs of abuse.

A second post mortem was conducted and the results which were made public yesterday revealed that he died of a bacterial infection.

Noor Rashid also said police are looking at reclassifying the case from murder to causing harm.

He said police have re-submitted the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor for further instructions.

A 29-year-old assistant warden at the Madrasah Tahfiz Al-Jauhar, was arrested after Thaqif’s death in April. The case was initially classified as murder afer reports emerged that the suspect had beaten Thaqif with a rubber hose.

The assistant warden, who had a previous conviction for robbery, was later released on a RM20,000 court bond, without being charged.

It is understood that Thaqif had complained to his mother about the beatings and also wrote in his diary about how the abuse had started in March. – July 11, 2017.
