PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has given the thumbs-up for the new Proton sports utility vehicle developed with Chinese manufacturer Geely.

The 93-year old test drove the car yesterday and said he was impressed by its good quality and make.

“I was testing the car. It was very good. The quality is very high and I think it is a good car for the market,” Dr Mahathir said in a press conference today.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman also met with several representatives from Geely last week to discuss the future of Proton, which he said should have more Malaysian representation.

“Proton may be managed by Geely, but we want Malaysians to participate in the supply. Malaysian manufacturers should participate in the process,” Dr Mahathir said.

DRB-Hicom entered into an agreement with Geely to enable the Chinese company to buy a 49.9% stake in Proton in May last year. – June 25, 2018.

  • Be very careful. I have a nasty suspicion Geely is NOT interested in Proton. They may well sooner or later return the Proton shares in exchange for 100% of Lotus which they wanted all along.

  • So what? Is Proton going to sell Proton SUV all over the world that is actually will always be one edition behind Geely's own that they sell all over the world? How is Proton ever going to be even national leader, much less a global leader which is what they should with an expensive SUV?
