FORMER prime minister Najib Razak today denied blaming 1MDB’s board for the financial debacle surrounding the state investor.

The statement follows an exclusive interview Najib granted Reuters recently where he was quoted as saying that it was incumbent upon the board to inform him if something was wrong in 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

“Najib would like to clarify that during the interview what he said was any board has a fiduciary duty to act in the best interests, and that the 1MDB board had a duty and responsibility to advise him on the running of the investment fund,” the unsigned statement said.

At no point during the interview did he say the 1MDB board was to be blame for what had happened in the state investor, it said.

Najib will make further clarification on this at the appropriate time, the statement added.

In the Reuters interview, Najib said the cash, handbags and jewellery seized from his home and several premises are “gifts to his wife and daughter” and have nothing to do with funds misappropriated from 1MDB.

Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, are barred from leaving the country. They were questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in relation to the RM42 million transferred into his bank accounts from SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1MDB. – June 21, 2018.
