I didn’t topple BN alone, says Dr Mahathir

PAKATAN Harapan’s success in the recent elections was the result of the unity and spirit of all Malaysians, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who added that the victory on May 9 was not his alone to claim credit for.

Dr Mahathir was speaking at the Hari Raya open house at his official residence Seri Perdana today, where thousands of Malaysians from all over the Klang Valley had come in hopes of being able to personally thank the 92-year-old leader for his role in rebuilding the country.

“A lot of people thanked me because we saved the country but it was not me alone. It was not only me who successfully toppled the previous government. It was the many Malaysians who are here today who gave us strong support to overcome all the challenges thrown at us by the former government,” said Dr Mahathir.

Dr Mahathir has elected to continue residing in his own house instead of moving into the official residence in Putrajaya, the venue of the open house.

He said democracy meant Malaysians were free to choose their government.

“If they feel that the government is old and unsuitable, they can change it with their votes. We don’t need violence or war between the people and the government.

“When the government knows that it is no longer wanted, it must look at the needs of the people.”

He said that the new government had received a lot of support from all races, indicating Malaysia would continue to be peaceful for many years to come.

“The spirit seen today shows the future of the nation.”

“With peace and security, we can restore our country to its former glory so that every Malaysian regardless of race can live in peace.”

Dr Mahathir also took a jab at the previous government’s “I love PM” campaign to show support for former prime minister Najib Razak.

“Many Malaysians have voiced their support for  me, with some saying ‘I love you’ to me.

“But we have not given them any placards, unlike during Najib’s time. But still they said ‘I love you’ to me.

“Thank you, everyone,” said Dr Mahathir before departing for Friday prayers. – June 15, 2018.
