THE government will study the Paddy and Rice Regulatory Division’s (KPB) proposal to raise the ceiling price of local white rice to ensure all parties benefit, said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu.
“The Finance Ministry; Economy Ministry; Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry; and Agriculture and Food Security Ministry will examine the requirements and how to implement it.
“This study is also needed because the price hasn’t changed since 2008,” he said when met at the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen’s Day Fair 2023 in Ipoh today.
KPB director-general Azman Mahmood, yesterday, said the ceiling price should be increased to RM3.20 per kg from RM2.60 to protect all parties involved, especially farmers.
He also explained the increase is important to prevent dumping, as manufacturers are not interested to sell due to low prices.
Commenting on the fair, Mohamad Sabu was confident more than 500,000 visitors would attend the three-day event which started on Friday.
“I am confident the target will be achieved. Until noon today, he total is 488,662 visitors, involving 452,647 physical and 36,015 online,” he said.
He said they proved the event is beneficial, not only to get necessities but also to learn about agriculture.
“Their presence demonstrates their support for the government’s appreciation of the farmers, breeders and fishermen,” he said. – Bernama, November 12, 2023.
