THE Johor assembly now uses the term “balancers” to refer to members of the opposition to better reflect their role as ordered by the state ruler last week.

Speaker Mohd Puad Zarkashi announced this during question time at the state assembly in Kota Iskandar today.

“As initiated yesterday by the Machap assemblyman (Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi) yesterday, we will use the term ‘balancer’ which is more noble, more accurate, more comprehensive and futuristic,” he said.

At the opening ceremony of the session yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar said the opposition =in Johor should be called “pihak pengimbang” instead of “pihak pembangkang” as they play the role of checks and balances for the government.

He said the other side is not there simply to oppose the government, as the name “opposition” implies. – Bernama, March 20, 2023.
