MCA has reminded Umno No. 2 Ahmad Zahid Hamidi of the Barisan Nasional spirit of mutual respect between component members, following a public ticking-off from the Malay party leader over its no-show at an event organised by the coalition.
In the first place, said MCA Youth Legal Bureau chief Ng Kian Nam, the Chinese party had neither been invited to nor notified of the event in Rembau.
“The MCA state secretariat did not receive an invitation. We were not absent on purpose,” said Ng.
He said Zahid, as the second man in BN, should have made sure he had all the facts before making accusations.
“I think there must be basic mutual respect between BN component parties; leaders must uphold the BN spirit. Please try to understand what has happened before speaking out – don’t simply humiliate or accuse component parties,” said Ng.
“It is not right to accuse us of not making an effort to attend the event without first knowing the reason for our absence.”
At an event yesterday in Negri Sembilan, Zahid, who is BN deputy chairman, had rebuked component party leaders for not showing up at grassroots events, saying they ought to “show respect”.
“Please show your face even if we ask you to contest elsewhere. Help our candidates, you want seats but don’t attend programmes.
“You must show respect for the seats to be contested. Don’t give the excuse that you’re busy. I want an excellent record,” Zahid was quoted as saying by Harian Metro.
In a China Press report today, MCA president Liow Tiong Lai had blamed the party’s non-appearance at the BN event on a “communication error”.
He said he had instructed Negri Sembilan MCA to submit a report on the matter.
Liow had also said that it was not appropriate for Zahid to accuse MCA before finding out the reason for its absence at the event.
Sinchew Daily reported Negri Sembilan MCA chairman King Lim Chin Fui as saying that the MCA state secretariat had not received notice of the event.
Lim said he regretted what he suspected might have been a technical error, adding he would find investigate to find out the truth. – March 14, 2018.
