Selangor Bersatu Youth lodges MACC complaint against minister

SELANGOR Bersatu Youth today lodged a complaint with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against a cabinet minister over his alleged involvement in a project in Penang by a company linked to the federal government.

Adhif Syan Abdullah, the wing’s leader, said the minister two years ago was chairman of a Finance Ministry-owned holdings company involved in property and urban infrastructure development.

“He was involved in the bidding of two mega projects in Penang when he was chairman. Now he is a minister.

“There were secret meetings between the minister and the Penang chief minister held to discuss the projects,” he told reporters outside MACC’s Putrajaya headquarters today.

The press conference was also broadcasted live on Facebook.

Details of the alleged “abuse” involving the minister, who relinquished his chairman position a few years ago when he was appointed to the cabinet, is sketchy.

Adhif said he could not reveal more information like the names and values of the two Penang projects.

He also did not say when the alleged abuse was committed.

“I handed over documents of the (alleged) wrongdoing to MACC. I cannot reveal more about the documents.

“I can only say we hope MACC will investigate the projects in Penang,” he said.

Adhif said the minister’s name had also recently come up as Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidate for Selangor menteri besar.

“The question now is whether he is fit to be menteri besar. A state government head should be honest and has integrity.

“Maybe there is something more behind this proposal. Selangor BN lacks capable leaders.”

Adhif said the minister, who won a federal seat in Kuala Lumpur with a slim majority of 866 votes in the 2013 general election, was also likely to be looking for a safer seat to contest and preserve his political career.

“But will Selangor BN leaders like Noh Omar and Jamal Md Yunos agree to let the minister come to (contest in) Selangor?”

The Malaysian Insight is attempting to contact the minister for a response. – March 12, 2018.
