FOREIGN newspapers and broadcasters are spreading fake news about 1Malaysia Development Bhd as part of an agenda to damage Prime Minister Najib Razak’s reputation ahead of the 14th general election, said a deputy minister today.
Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Jailani Johari warned the foreign media to stop putting out fake news on 1MDB, which has been mired in scandal over its debts and alleged leakages said to have funded luxury purchases and movie productions.
“The ministry has identified several news portals that are trying to revive the 1MDB issue following the seizure of the Equanimity. Among those portals are The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), The New York Times, The Economist, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and the latest, MSNBC,” Sinar Harian quoted Jailani as saying.
He said fake news pertaining to 1MDB is being spread to tarnish Najib’s credibility.
He said fake news on 1MDB has been detected since last week.
“We believe that these efforts are by certain quarters who have a political agenda and are trying to damage the prime minister’s good name ahead of GE14.”
He said the ministry is monitoring the situation through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, and advised the portals to stop publishing fake news on 1MDB.
News on 1MDB, which was once headed by Najib, resurfaced last week after Indonesian authorities seized businessman Low Taek Jho’s RM1 billion luxury yacht in Bali.
It was reported that Indonesia had seized the yacht at the request of US investigators probing into the misappropriation and laundering of funds from 1MDB.
Indonesian national police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal Abduh said police were acting on the request of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, which had asked for help to enforce a court order in a letter dated February 21.
On March 1, WSJ reported that it had reviewed a cache of emails from a top Republican fundraiser, asking for as much as US$75 million (RM295 million) from Low to get the US to stop investigating 1MDB.
The American business daily said the matter involved US President Donald Trump’s ally, Elliot Broidy, a venture capitalist and long-time Republican donor, and his wife, Robin Rosenzweig, a lawyer.
“The messages include draft agreements between Rosenzweig’s law firm and representatives of Low on the possible terms of their business engagement. In one draft, there is a proposal that includes a US$75 million fee if the Department of Justice quickly drops its investigation,” said WSJ.
American TV news channel MSNBC also reported on the Equanimity’s seizure.
Anchor Rachel Maddow recapped the 1MDB investigations, how US$680 million was found in Najib’s account and how no action was taken because it was a “present from the Saudi royal family”.
The Economist ran a report, titled “Malaysia’s PM is about to steal an election”, on March 8, saying the ruling government is expected to win GE14 despite having US$4.5 billion missing from the state investment fund. – March 11, 2018.

The immediate consequence will be death of democracy because Malaysians have relied on internet news to get fair coverage. Without access to fair coverage, we will only be fed government propaganda from now on. Over a longer period, multimedia and IT industries will start leaving Malaysia.
My note to rural/Felda folks - you may be happy living in your own cocoon, sheltered, splashed with occasional money and freebies from the federal government. But you need to ask yourself whether that too will go away one day when a totalitarian government can just keep manipulating elections, give IC to immigrants etc. to help them win elections. When there is no more money to give because they have gone bankrupt with so many mega scandals, when there's nothing left to give you, and you feel angry, it no longer matters because they can use someone or some other system to help them win elections. There is no end to what they can manipulate or change the law. So you better decide if you want to keep that little benefit you have while the country burns, or it's time to do something for your country, grow a backbone and some courage, and vote them out.
