PENANG Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today said he will see Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim in court.
The Umno Supreme Council leader is suing Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, for defamation, for linking him to alleged corruption in the Penang undersea tunnel and highways project.
Azeez, who turned out to be a victim of name-dropping, has given Lim four days, starting yesterday, to issue an apology.
“Apologise for what?” Lim told reporters at his Komtar office.
“They should take action against the party that sent him a notice of demand.
“I was only referring to that (letter). I was asking the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (what it plans to do with Azeez), not him.”
Last week, Azeez was linked to the mega project after Malaysiakini, quoting sources, said project contractor Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd had sent Azeez and another person notices of demand for failing to deliver consultancy services.
The portal reported that money was paid to have the MACC investigation into the project “settled”.
Lim had said the state government was in the dark about the money, and asked when the anti-graft agency would haul up Azeez.
He had said DAP had been made a scapegoat and slammed for getting kickbacks, when it was Umno that was getting the money.
Azeez, from the start, has said he never had dealings with Consortium Zenith. MACC later confirmed that the MP was not a suspect.
It was reported that MACC had remanded two businessmen, and one of them had used Azeez’s name.
On Sunday, the Umno Supreme Council member had said certain parties had slandered him, Umno and Tabung Haji, of which he is chairman.
Following the graft allegations, questions have been raised as to whether Azeez is fit to head the pilgrims’ fund.
He had said Consortium Zenith had sent his lawyer a letter last weekend, acknowledging the error of the notice of demand caused by a businessman’s name-dropping.
The notice of demand has been retracted, with Consortium Zenith offering Azeez help to put to rest negative news coverage of him. – March 7, 2018.
