SUNGAI Besar Umno division chief Jamal Yunos has told Wee Ka Siong to step down as MCA president over a purported letter he signed urging Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to resign.

He said more than 100 Umno division leaders will gather at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur at 3pm tomorrow to call for the Ayer Hitam MP’s resignation.

“We, the Umno division leaders, will defend our president and Barisan Nasional chairman, and will ask Wee Ka Siong to step down instead for making such a statement (asking Zahid to step down),” Jamal told reporters at the Umno headquarters tonight.

Earlier today, a letter started circulating, bearing the signatures of Wee, MIC president S.A. Vigneswaran and PBRS deputy president Joseph Arthur Kurup, calling for a vote of no confidence against Zahid.

They said Zahid had defied the BN Supreme Council’s decision not to support any coalition in forming the federal government.

They also said Zahid’s decision to send a letter backing Anwar Ibrahim for the prime minister’s post to Istana Negara had gone against the collective decision made by BN.

MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon confirmed the veracity of the letter to The Malaysian Insight.

Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has also demanded that Wee quit over BN’s dismal performance in Saturday’s general election.

“He (Wee) should resign first because MCA contested 44 seats and only won two, both of which were Malay-majority areas,” he told reporters at the Umno headquarters tonight.

“That means that he has failed to win the support of Chinese voters and should take responsibility for that.”

This morning, BN’s top three met the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Zahid said the king decreed that BN be part of a unity government.

“Tuanku’s decree was to form a unity government,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.

On BN not backing any coalition to form the government, Zahid said it was not part of the king’s order.

He said the matter will be deliberated by Umno’s and BN’s supreme councils later.

Yesterday, Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin, who met with the king, rejected the possibility of forming a unity government with Pakatan Harapan (PH).

PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim, who similarly met the king, said besides wanting a unity government, His Majesty also wanted the formation of a strong and formidable government that is inclusive of all races and religions.

“This allows the government to focus on solving the problems of the people and resuscitating the economy,” he said.

In Saturday’s general election, PH won 76 seats, its member Sarawak DAP secured five and ally Muda, one, for a total of 82.

PN and PAS won 51 and 22 seats respectively, for a combined total of 73.

BN only won 30 seats. – November 23, 2022.
