RoS approves Umno bid to postpone party elections

THE Registrar of Societies (RoS) today affirmed it has approved Umno’ application to postpone its party elections to 2019.

In a statement today, Surayati Ibrahim of RoS said such a postponement was permitted in Clause 10.17 of the ruling Malay party’s constitution.

The clause allows a further extension of 18 months on top of the three years allowed in Clause 9.3, making for a total time allowance of 56 months between the last party elections and the next.

The last party elections were held on October 19, 2013. 

RoS said Umno had fixed April 19, 2019 as the date for party elections.

“It is to be noted that every registered party (and organisation) shall carry out its business in accordance with its constitutional provisions and the Societies Act 1966 (Act 335),” said Surayati.

A lawyer had recently said that RoS should compel all political parties to hold their meetings on time, as required by their constitutions.

Haniff Khatri Abdulla, who is the lawyer of Bersatu chairman Dr Mahathir Mohammad, had said that Umno would be declared illegal if Ros held the party to the same “rigorous” standards to which the opposition was held. – March 5, 2018.

  • That's almost 5 years since last party election. Might as well change the constitution to have nmo electoon at all

  • Different rules for different political parties. RoS should be ashame that rules have been bent to suit UMNO
