THE Najib administration has spoken out in favour of Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, saying there is no proof he is the owner of the super yacht seized by Indonesian authorities yesterday in Bali.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said there was also no proof that funds from 1Malaysia Development Bhd were used to purchase the RM1 billion vessel, the Equanimity.
Indonesian authorities yesterday seized the yacht that the United States Justice Department (DoJ) has alleged was bought by Low with money siphoned from troubled state-investment arm 1MDB.
Low, confidante and business adviser to Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is also said to have close ties with several ministers, has been named by DoJ as the mastermind in a scheme to siphon billions of dollars from the state investment fund.
Salleh said the source of the allegations was the DoJ civil suit, which had been on hold since last August.
“Until today, apart from bare allegations contained in the suit, the DoJ has not shown any tangible proof that Low is the actual owner of the yacht or that it was purchased with funds from 1MDB.
“Furthermore, the DoJ has yet to prove any of its allegations in a court of law, despite nearly two years passing since its sensationalised press conference of July 2016,” he said in a statement.
Salleh said the DoJ had alleged in its suit that the source of funds was Aabar BVI, which the DoJ claimed had business dealings with Low.
“The directors of Aabar BVI were Khadem Al Qubaisy and Mohammed Al Badawy, formerly senior employees in the IPIC group.
“1MDB has repeatedly clarified that while it did have business dealings with Aabar BVI, 1MDB has not had any business dealings with Low.
Salleh also blasted the opposition for misleading the people with “unverified and unproven allegations” regarding the yacht.
He said the “Dr Mahathir Mohamad and DAP-led Pakatan Harapan was using fake news” as their primary weapon to gain support in the general election to come.
“This is yet another failed attempt to mislead Malaysians, using fake news.
“Right-thinking Malaysians will remember how Dr Mahathir started the fake news attack on 1MDB, by wrongly stating that RM42 billion was missing, only to be proven wrong time and time again.
“In their desperation, it is sad to see Dr Mahathir and the opposition mindlessly recycling unproven allegations and irresponsibly spreading fake news.” – March 1, 2018.

The answer lies in the fact that he is not talking to an audience like the Malaysiakini readers, but Umno’s captive electorate. Be sure that Salleh’s audacious denial will be given full blast in BN-controlled TV channels and the Malay and English newspapers.
Retaining the support of such electorate and winning GE 14 is all that matters to Umno now; and to hell with everything else!
