THE Court of Appeal will hear clerk Sam Ke Ting’s appeal against her six-year prison sentence and RM6,000 fine for reckless driving, which she received following a crash that killed eight teen cyclists in Johor.

A three-member Court of Appeal bench was unanimous in granting the 27-year-old’s request this morning.

The court also stayed her custodial sentence and fine. The bench, led by Justice P. Ravindran along with Lee Heng Cheong and Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, has yet to set a date for the hearing.

The court retained Sam’s RM10,000 bail with one surety.

Sam was required to obtain permission from the appellate court hear her case, because it originated in the Magistrate’s Court.

Last week, Johor Baru High Court overturned her acquittal, following an appeal by the prosecution. Judge Abu Bakar Katar also denied an application by Sam’s lawyers for a stay of the sentence pending appeal. – April 18, 2022.
