Court jails fire station chief for giving contract to wife

A FIRE and rescue station head in Pekan was sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of RM200,000, in lieu of a further five years in prison, by the Sessions Court in Kuantan today on 10 counts of awarding catering contracts to his wife’s company.

Sessions Court judge Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain said Sheikh Hassan Sheikh Zainuddin, 57, could not provide enough evidence to cast reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case.

However, Zamzani granted Sheikh Hassan a stay on his sentence, pending appeal at the High Court, and increased bail to RM10,000.

Sheikh Hassan was charged with using his position for gratification by awarding contracts to Puncak Cahaya Azam Enterprise, a company owned by his wife, to provide food for the station for the period between March 2014 and August 3, 2015, with each contract worth RM1,075 to RM7,500.

The firefighter was charged under section 23 of the Malaysian Anti -Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. – Bernama, March 16, 2022.
