6.1-magnitude Indonesia quake tremors felt in Malaysia

TREMORS from an earthquake in North Sumatra, Indonesia were felt along the west coast of West Malaysia, the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said today.

Its director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said there was no tsunami warning for the 9.39am earthquake.

“The epicentre of the earthquake is located 0.2° north and 100° east with a depth of 10km, 76km from Payakumbuh, Indonesia,” he said.

Tremors were felt in Selangor, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor.

“There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.”

On social media, some Malaysians said they vacated their offices when they felt the tremor.

“Felt an earthquake just now @Putrajaya, Malaysia. Stay safe, everyone,” a user wrote.

Bernama reported that office workers in several high-rises in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya rushed out to the streets upon feeling the buildings tremble.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Paudzi said that based on information from his staff, the tremors were felt throughout Kuala Lumpur.

“So far, there have been no calls for emergency assistance linked to the tremors.

“Nevertheless, fire and rescue service personnel are prepared for any eventuality. The department will monitor the situation via MetMalaysia,” Nordin said.

In Putrajaya, the tremor was felt at the federal government’s administration centre and staff of several ministries were instructed to evacuate the buildings, including those at the Communications and Multimedia Ministry and Housing and Local Government Ministry in Precinct 4, and Setia Perdana Complex and the Federal Territories Ministry in Precinct 2.

All the staff were asked to gather in open areas near their respective ministries.

Staff at the Prime Minister’s Department in Complex B said they were allowed to re-enter the building at 10.25am. – February 25, 2022.
