AN audio recording alleging an attempt to sabotage the Permatang Pauh seat has been found by PKR.
PKR information chief Afif Bahardin said the recording was sent to him.
“This recording was at the Pemukiman Jentera Pilihan Raya Umno Cawangan (Umno branch election machinery),” he said at a press conference at PKR headquarters today
The one minute and 17 seconds recording, played at the press conference, was a speech of a man urging listeners to keep secret that more than 800 police voters from “Tanjung and Datuk Keramat and beside Penang Road, had been moved quietly to Permatang Pauh”.
Dr Afif said the recording was sent after the Umno branch election machinery meeting at Seberang Perai Polytechnic on January 28.
“The recording confirms there is manipulation of postal and early votes by Umno,” he said, adding the identity of his “trusted source” must be kept secret.
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar who was present at the press conference, urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to include vote manipulation as part of its investigation on corruption.
“Before this, I had brought the case of fake voters’ residences in Wangsa Maju but Election Commission(EC) chairman (Mohd Hashim Abdullah) said action should be taken by the police.
“So in light of this revelation, since it involves the police and the EC, we have no choice but to depend on MACC,” she said.
The Malaysian Insight had reported PKR fears losing Wangsa Maju, a seat it won by 5,511 votes in 2013, because of an influx of some 5,000 voters with dubious details.
EC chairman Hashim had responded it was up to the police to act on suspicious voter registrations. This was followed by PKR urging the police to apprehend the perpetrators responsible.
“Do you think it is easy to get this recording? Do we look like private investigators to you? I don’t think we are asking for too much now (but for the EC and police to do its job).”
“Action must be taken by MACC regarding the investigation (of the 800 police voters),” said Nurul Izzah. – February 8, 2018.
