DEVELOPERS need to pay attention to the proposal for them to ensure child safety in multi-storey housing, said Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Ismail Abd Muttalib, following recent incidents where toddlers had fallen to their deaths from high-rise properties.

The minister said he was aware the proposal would mean increased costs but it would be necessary for child safety, he told reporters in Putrajaya today.

On November 16, a four-year-old girl died after falling from the 29th floor of a condominium on Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, and the following day a five-year-old boy died, believed to have fallen from the 16th floor of a condominium in Batu Caves, Gombak.

Federal Territories Minister Shahidan Kassim was reportedly to have instructed Kuala Lumpur City Hall to ensure developers prioritise the safety of residents, including building higher barriers. – Bernama, November 30, 2021.

  • It is not for developers to decide on safety in buildings, but for the government to legislate. Not certified buildings cannot be sold.
