UNITY among races is the key for Malaysia to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah said today.

Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the Agong urged all Malaysians to look after their health and unite in creating a safe environment in light of Covid-19.

“Social and national integration, and unity among the races are key for the country to overcome any challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic,” the Agong said in a statement commemorating the 64th Merdeka Day.

“Irresponsible people who flout SOPs are a plague on society and have derailed the recovery plan put forth by the government.”

The Agong also urged all political parties to set aside their differences and instead work together closely in a “symbiotic” relationship to steer the country out of the pandemic.

“In line with the ‘Malaysia Prihatin’ theme, the government must continue to shape and implement plans to help the people, and ensure a return to better economic times.”

The Covid-19 immunisation programme, the Agong said, must also be stepped up to ensure Malaysia achieves herd immunity.

“The people must also hold the ‘Malaysia Prihatin’ principles close to heart and get vaccinated to protect themselves, their families and the community.”

Though this is the second year the Merdeka Day celebration is held against the backdrop of Covid-19, the Agong said it should not hinder Malaysians from professing their patriotism and celebrating the day.

He also thanked all the front-liners from the healthcare sector, government services and armed forces for their contribution in handling the Covid-19 pandemic. – August 31, 2021.
