JOHOR is facing Covid-19 vaccine shortages, while the state is seeing a rise in daily cases, Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching said today.

According to Teo, there was a shortage at the EduCity sports complex vaccination centre, which only started dispensing jabs on August 2, aiming to inoculate 1,000 people daily.

“However, three weeks later, it is now facing a vaccine shortage.

“The Educity centre was informed about the shortage of first doses on August 22, so it will not be administering them from today until further notice,” she said in a statement.

Johor has been consistently reporting more than 1,000 infections daily since July 28, when 767 Covid-19 cases were recorded.

Yesterday, Malaysia reported 19,807 cases and 232 deaths. In Johor, there were 1,391 infections and 62 deaths.

Teo also pointed out that the state’s vaccination rate was still below the national average.

“As of August 22, 78% of the Malaysia adult population have received at least one dose of vaccine, but this is only 68.3% in Johor,” she said.

“All this while Johor has not received the vaccine that we need and deserve, despite the promise that we would receive 2 million doses in August,” she said.

Teo said this was completely unacceptable as many manufacturing industries were waiting for their vaccination appointments for their workers.

She said every day there was a delay may expose the public to infection or even risk of death.

“The public gets angry when their vaccination appointments are deferred or suspended,” she said.

She said the authorities must be fair to Johor and make sure all vaccination centres in the state are operating in their maximum capacity. – August 23, 2021.
