MALAYSIA has seen an exponential surge in Covid-19 cases as the country reported a record 13,215 fresh infections in the past 24 hours, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
The director-general of health said the new infections in the country have brought the national caseload to 880,782.
This is the third consecutive day that Malaysia is reporting daily cases in five-figures.
Of the new infections today, Selangor reported 6,120 cases, taking the state’s case load to 307,094.
Coming second in the list with a wide gap of almost 5,000 cases is Negri Sembilan, which reported 1,603 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 1,499 cases.
This means, the greater Klang Valley, which includes Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya reported a staggering 7,672 cases or 58% of the total figure today.
Perlis recorded three new cases as of noon today, making it the only state to report single-digit infections.
The new infections reported today in both Selangor and Negri Sembilan are the highest in the states since the onset of the pandemic.
Noor Hisham said daily cases are expected to increase over the next fortnight before stabilising as the authorities ramp up testing.
Meanwhile, a record 434,828 doses of Covid-10 vaccine were administered yesterday under the national immunisation programme.
The Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV) said 279,938 people received their first dose and 154,890 their second.
In total, the programme has administered 12.64 million jabs.
Four million people, or 17.1% of the adult population, are now fully vaccinated and 8.64 million, or 36.9% of adults, have had a first dose. – July 15, 2021.
