MALAYSIA has set yet another record for the highest number of Covid-19 cases in a single day. And Najib Razak had this to say on his social media: step down.

Najib took to his Facebook account just minutes after the Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reported that Malaysia had logged 11,079 new Covid-19 infections in the past 24 hours.

He said that there were 11,079 new cases today, and followed it with “#letakjawatan” (step down).

In a second posting, he mocked the government by saying that the people had asked for the withdrawal limit under the i-Citra EPF scheme to be raised to RM10,000, but “the government instead raised Covid to above 11k”.

The i-Citra is a new scheme announced by Muhyiddin last month to allow EPF contributors to withdraw RM5,000 from their retirement savings to help them cope with financial difficulties.

Earlier this week, Najib said Muhyiddin should step down for failing to effectively manage the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

He said this in response to Umno’s decision to retract support for Muhyiddin, and in their seeking an interim prime minister appointed to handle the health crisis.

“Umno’s suggestion was for the eighth prime minister to take responsibility and step down as the country’s Covid-19 situation and economy have taken a turn for the worse after the government was given full emergency powers for seven months, and this was followed by a several lockdowns,” he said in a Facebook post on Sunday.

“Some said changing the prime minister now will affect the government’s effort in fighting Covid-19. But what else is there to say if all efforts put in still fail after seven months?

“One certainly has to be responsible for his failure which has cost the lives and livelihoods of Malaysians.

“Let the government keep functioning with new policies by welcoming a new prime minister who can instil confidence in the people,” he said. – July 13, 2021.
