Covid-19 deaths pass 6,000 mark while active cases continue to soar

THE number of fatalities in Malaysia has surpassed the 6,000 mark with 87 new deaths recorded as of noon today, said Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The death toll in the country now stands at 6,067.

The number of deaths tallied before the start of the hard lockdown on June 1 was 2,796. However, the number had shot up by 3,271 in just 40 days.

Noor Hisham said as new Covid-19 infections continue to outnumber recoveries in the country, active cases are also soaring.

He said the active cases in the country increased to 84,021 after 9,353 new infections were reported against 5,910 recoveries in the past 24 hours.

Noor Hisham said of the 87 fatalities, nine were foreigners.

He said 50 deaths were reported in Selangor alone.

Other states to report deaths were Johor (8), Pahang (6), Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Negri Sembilan (5 each), Malacca (4), Penang (2), Kelantan and Labuan (1 each).

Eight victims were declared dead on arrival.

The oldest fatality today was a 97-year-old woman who had no known medical conditions. She succumbed to the virus at the Kuala Lumpur hospital, while the youngest, a 26-year-old woman with asthma and obesity, died at the Sungai Buloh hospital. – July 10, 2021.
