Active cases increasing, hospitals running out of beds

THE number of active Covid-19 cases in Malaysia continued to increase as new infections outnumbered recoveries for the past nine consecutive days.

Active cases in the past 24 hours were 65,453 with 905 patients in critical care. A total of 443 patients are on respiratory support.

This latest data comes amidst reports of public hospitals experiencing a critical shortage of beds.

It was reported that doctors at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital have had to perform procedures and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the floor while the Sungai Buloh Hospital had also breached capacity and was not accepting referrals.

Malaysia reported 73 fatalities today, taking the death count in the country to 5,327.

Of the fatalities recorded today, nine were foreigners and the rest were locals.

On the breakdown of fatalities by states, only Selangor and Negri Sembilan reported deaths in double digits with 29 and 13 deaths respectively.

Other states which recorded deaths were Kuala Lumpur and Sabah (five each), Johor, Pahang and Sarawak (four each), Labuan (3), Kelantan and Penang (two each), and one each in Malacca and Kedah.

A total of 13 dead on arrival cases were also recorded today. – July 2, 2021.
