Active Covid-19 case numbers continue to drop

THE number of active Covid-19 cases nationwide continued to decline today, due to more recoveries reported than new infections for the past 15 consecutive days.

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that, as of noon today, 5,439 recoveries against 4,611 new cases were reported over the previous 24 hours, bringing down the active case total to 62,918.

The last time Malaysia logged more new cases than recoveries was on June 6, when there 86,628 active cases.

During this 15-day period, the number of active cases has plummeted by 23,710, while the nation also reported a record number of recoveries of 8,334 on June 12. 

However, Noor Hisham said that there were no changes in the number of patients in intensive care units nationwide with 880 people requiring critical care, although 452 people require respiratory support, two less than yesterday.

Despite the positives, 69 people died today, nine more than yesterday.

Malaysia’s death toll from Covid-19 is now 4,477.

Of the fatalities today, Selangor reported 24 deaths, followed by Kuala Lumpur (11), Negri Sembilan (nine), Johor (seven), Kelantan and Labuan (four each), Kedah (three), Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak (two each) and Malacca (one).

Five victims were declared dead on arrival.

The oldest victim, aged 93, a female with comorbidities succumbed to the illness in Hospital Serdang, while the youngest, a 28-year-old woman, had obesity and died in Hospital Tunku Ja’afar, Seremban. – June 21, 2021.
