Nearly 90% of Covid dead are elderly, people with comorbidities, data show

DATA from the Health Ministry showed that the severity of Covid symptoms and the likelihood of death increased with age and the existence of comorbidities.

An infographic on Covid deaths dated June 1 showed that 88%, or 2,510 of the 2,867 victims were 50 and older. Eighty-eight percent of them had more than one comorbidity, and 85% had Stage 4 and 5 symptoms and required respiratory assistance.

Since the onset of the pandemic last year, 2,867 people have died. The highest number of daily deaths was 98 on May 29.

The mortality rate in Malaysia is 0.49% of the 579,462 caseload.

It is reported that 14%, or 407 of of the virus deaths were dead on arrival in hospital

More men died of the disease than women, making up 63% of reported deaths.

The oldest person to die of Covid-19 on these shores was foreigner Talib Omar, who was 130, on November 28 in Tuaran, Sabah. 

He did not have any personal documents on him. His details were obtained by the Health Ministry from his family and the local authorities.

The press has speculated that he could have been the world’s oldest person to die of Covid-19.

On February 4, the coronavirus claimed its youngest victim –  a four-month-old boy in Sabah – in Malaysia. 

Health Minister Dr Adham Baba revealed on Monday that 82,341 of the total 579,462 cases were people aged below 18. – June 2, 2021.
