May 28 decision for boy’s citizenship appeal in Federal Court

A SEVEN-MEMBER bench of the Federal Court is set to deliver its verdict on May 28 in the appeal by a 10-year-old boy, who was born to a Malaysian father and a Filipino mother, to get Malaysian citizenship.

When contacted, Sharimini Thiruchelvam, who is one of the lawyers representing the child, and senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan, representing the director-general of the National Registration Department (NRD), the Home Ministry secretary-general and the government of Malaysia, confirmed the date.

  • Its perverse that a child born to a Malaysian woman overseas cannot have Malaysian citizenship through her, and if it is born to foreign woman who acquired citizenship, according to this 2017 ruling, the child can have Malaysian citizenship through the mother. One or the other is wrong!
