HEALTH Minister Dr Adham Baba warned today that Selangor will be put under full lockdown if the number of Covid-19 cases cannot be brought under control soon.

“I agree that we need to propose to the government to tighten standard operating procedure and also the movement-control order (MCO).

“If we are unable to curb (the situation), then the proposal to implement a full MCO is something that can be considered,” the health minister said at a joint weekly press conference with Khairy Jamaluddin on inoculation efforts.

Adham’s response comes after he was questioned on the increasing number of cases in Selangor even after MCO 3.0 was enforced.

For 25 straight days, Selangor has registered the highest number of daily infections among the states.

Initially, only six districts in the state were placed under MCO but it was extended nationwide from May 12 to June 7.

This is the first time that the government has enforced a four-week MCO while the previous orders were issued for up to two weeks at a time.

Under this MCO, there were stricter restrictions against inter-district and interstate travel, social activities, sports and education. However, economic sectors remained open.

In just six days of MCO 3.0, Malaysia reported a total of 22,099 cases.

It also reported a record 44 deaths on May 15.

Overall caseload is now at 474,556, while the death toll is close to reaching 2,000. – May 17, 2021.

My last question is why not NOW to conduct a full lock down in Selangor why later??? Still thinking of economics is it?? economics for who as those ordinary folks are already in the limbo and out of jobs that you are still thinking for the businesses that are effected well the ones down the road has already effected long before you were toying with this idea. Its not tomorrow the call and to made the decision is NOW Adham and being a doctor you of all person should know better.

  • What does a full lockdown mean? And for how long? Are all factories and businesses closed or only the non-food ones? What about IT, stationery, plumbing, roof, electricity repair and supply services which are not on the essential list? Are businesses allowed to furlough employees? or retrench them? Is Govt subsidizing the salaries or allowing pay cuts? What about work that requires essential communication with banks and other government agencies, which if not done will undo or scupper transactions or result in failed transactions or disputes? How will this be handled? Is Government providing high level data bandwidth for all families for work and education purposes? Will government be giving out free food and groceries for all the B40 and M40 families that are affected as they dont have savings to rely on? Will government provide employees who have lost their jobs due to the lockdown with welfare payments so that they have a roof over their heads and food on the table?
