MCMC complains to social media companies about unidentified gambling advert

THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has complained to Facebook about another Raya-themed video advert promoting gambling.

In a statement today, MCMC said it had requested social media platform providers – Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube – to take down the advertisement based on their terms of service and community standards.

It said there was a sharp increase in the number of posts it reported to the platform providers today, as social media users had been reposting the advert, which complicated the process.

“The videos were uploaded on overseas-based platforms and cannot be controlled,” it said.

The MCMC said so far it had requested Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to take down 61 posts from the platforms, adding that 13% of which had been deleted.

The MCMC said it was relying on Malaysian social media users to report the ads directly to the authorities.

It said sharing this content only helped the people producing it, adding that content creators and distributors were required to comply with the Communications and Multimedia Content Code.

The MCMC said content creators are free to create but need to follow the content code in line with the norms of a diverse Malaysian society.

At the same time, it said, production crew members and actors should be more sensitive to avoid collusion with groups in promoting online gambling, which is an offence. – Bernama, April 17, 2021.
