Look into phone-tapping, not Zahid-Anwar exchange, says ex-law minister

FORMER de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim has questioned if phone-tapping was involved in the leaked telephone conversation purportedly between Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

Zaid on his Twitter account said the issue was not about the purported conversation between the two leaders on their political cooperation.

“What we want to know is who ordered the tapping? Is it legal? But, I don’t think anything will come out of it.

“They can’t see the video clearly, remember?” he tweeted, referring to the lack of police action over a smut video allegedly linking a senior minister in the Perikatan Nasional government.

Zaid was referring to leaked conversation supposedly between Zahid and Anwar on the outcome of the recent Umno general assembly, where the party had severed ties with Bersatu and PN.

However, both leaders have come out to deny that they were the ones in the audio clip.

Zaid also questioned why must a police report be lodged before investigations on the leaked clip can commence.

“Police can start the process as they did in my case five years ago,” he tweeted.

He was also reported as saying that police had enough authority to open up an investigation paper, regardless of whether a report was made.

“When I was charged under the Communications and Multimedia Act, no one had lodged a report. It was Bukit Aman. So, this idea that you cannot investigate unless there is a report is ridiculous. It is rubbish,” he said.

On Sunday, police urged Zahid and Anwar to come forward and lodge a report if they truly believed they have been slandered over the audio clip of an alleged conversation between them, which has since gone viral.

Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said police have received seven reports from various parties on the matter so far but none of it was made by the two political leaders or their representatives. – April 13, 2021.
