UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi must step down if a leaked audio recording of him and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is genuine, said Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

The Umno elder told Sinar Harian Zahid is expected to lead the party with integrity.

“I am not sure if the audio clip is genuine but the voice sounds like his.

“If it is him, and if he has such motives as discussed in the audio clip, then it is irresponsible, and he is not fit to remain president.

“This is not good. A leader should not act like that. He must be more responsible as many party members have placed their hopes in him to lead responsibly. He should not be looking for the easy way,” the Gua Musang MP was quoted as saying.

 Tengku Razaleigh, better known as Ku Li, was among several other Umno leaders who had urged Zahid to step down after the audio recording went viral on Tuesday evening.

The recording appears to be of a conversation between two people who sound like Zahid and Anwar, discussing political schemes that do not concur with the recent decisions of the Umno Supreme Council.

 At the Umno AGM, the party decided that it would not work with Bersatu, Anwar and DAP in the next general election.

Both Zahid and Anwar have denied it is their voices in the clip.

They have lodged separate police reports on the matter.

Umno Supreme Council member Zahidi Zainul Abidin has also urged Zahid to step down if the audio clip is genuine.

Several leaders of the party’s youth and women’s wings have also made similar calls for an investigation into the authenticity of the recording. – April 8, 2021.
