Why won’t Parliament sit, Anwar asks Muhyiddin

PAKATAN Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim today questioned Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s silence on whether Parliament should sit during the emergency.

“Why aren’t there statements from the prime minister as a sign to respect the king’s statement?

“Prior to this, the government told Malaysians that the emergency was declared by the king and therefore, it cannot be questioned,” Anwar said on Facebook today.

Anwar, who is also the opposition leader, said it has been a week since Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah said Parliament can meet during the emergency.

Muhyiddin’s silence, said Anwar, only proves that the Perikatan Nasional government still lacks a majority to govern the country.

“So much so that they need to buy more MPs,” said the PKR president.

On Sunday, two PKR lawmakers – Larry Sng (Julau) and Steven Choong (Tebrau) – quit their party and pledged to support Muhyiddin.

This comes after two Barisan Nasional MPs said they had withdrawn their support for the Bersatu president last month, leaving the government with just 110 MPs in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat.

Anwar today accused PN of using underhanded tactics to buy over MPs “in any way they can to get support before Parliament reconvenes.”

An emergency was declared on January 12 and it included the suspension of parliamentary sitting until August 1. – March 1, 2021.
