Canadian MPs call Chinese treatment of Uighurs ‘genocide’

CANADIAN lawmakers passed a non-binding motion yesterday calling China’s treatment of its Uighur minority a “genocide” and calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to officially label it as such.

The motion, introduced by opposition Conservatives, was passed unanimously in the House of Commons by 266 votes out of 338. The other MPs, including ministers from Trudeau’s Liberal government, abstained.
